Album Review: Lamagaius by Lamagaia

This one-track 28 minute album was originally recorded in 2012, and has previously only seen a very limited cassette release the following year, Lamagaia itself was founded in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2010. Three years later from that comes a self-released vinyl edition limited to 300 copies, and for the majority of us, for whom this is our first chance to hear it, I have to say it has been worth the wait

More than that it is as if the track has been somehow gestating in some sort of kosmische womb waiting for the right moment to present itself. I say that because this is not the random twiddling of a new band finding its way, but a fully formed slice of space drone music that can and will inveigle its way into your brain and make the world somehow feel better. This is a track that has a certain ambience to it, yet it does not waft over you…rather it slowly infuses itself into you.

In many ways this is straight from the heady days of early 1970s Dusseldorf, Cologne or Berlin with its endlessly repetitive beats and riffs, but with a difference as band member Micael explained to me:

“We came together with the common goal of just playing what felt good more or less. Coming from varying backgrounds in terms of music, we were all a little tired of the “usual format” with fixed song structures and a solid idea on how the sound should be.  This has stuck with us to present day, basically we rely more on how we play in the moment than having structure.”

It explains why the track feels so organic, as if you are listening to it being played for the first time, of being in the moment.

I cannot get enough of this track and, by the sound of it there is more to come since I believe that the band records nearly all of its jam sessions, meaning that there is more than a Terabyte of music sitting there on some server waiting, gestating, growing and ready to be introduced to the world when the time is right.
